Young children through adults can teach themselves to read using Dolch words that are pictured, partially by sound, partially by meaning so BOTH access routes are integrated. Cover the picture, use the word as a flash card; if you can't read the word, uncover the picture for a sound and meaning cue. A truly unique approach that is half way between phonics and sight words.
